Ethos and Aims

Our Ethos

Bruton School for Girls aims to create a structured but challenging environment and so encourage a lively intellect, initiative, independence and respect for others.  In a forward-looking and caring community with traditional values, a wide range of opportunities – academic, creative, sporting and social – is provided by a dedicated staff, allowing confident, adaptable and sensible young women to leave the school well prepared to succeed in life.

The Aims of the School

To enable the girls…

to experience and enjoy success in as broad a range of spheres as possible, including their academic studies, sport, the creative and performing arts, posts of responsibility and their social lives

to develop self-confidence without arrogance, self-awareness and resilience, appreciating the spiritual and cultural aspects of life

to develop the capacity to make informed, rational and responsible decisions

at all times to feel motivated by their studies and to be aware of their own level of performance and progress and to realise their full potential

To provide…

pupils of all ages with a broad and relevant curriculum suited to their individual needs

opportunities for pupils to experience a variety of activities, ideas and attitudes and to consider a wide range of issues

To encourage…

all girls and members of staff to be part of an active community, a “thinking school” based on mutual respect, responsible to each other and to society at large

tolerance and sensitivity and an appreciation of the value of courtesy

a healthy lifestyle

To challenge…

the older students in particular to think seriously about their future plans and to provide them with the support, advice and information they need

everyone to extend their range of experience, to learn more about themselves and what they are capable of achieving, to aspire to excellence
