We value every girl and her contribution to life at Bruton
Our pastoral care is second to none and every girl from the Nursery and Pre-Prep through to the Sixth Form is well-known and cared for according to her individual needs.
Preparatory School
Girls in the Preparatory School are taught in form groups and remain with their form teacher for the duration of the school year. Matters of pastoral care are, in the first instance, overseen by the form teachers who discuss all matters with the Head of the Pre-Prep or Headmaster who are similarly familiar with the individual needs of each pupil.
We wish to promote a positive environment by placing an emphasis on accentuating the positive rather than focusing on the negative. We encourage, teach and reward good behaviour and positive relationships.
A House system promotes healthy competition and school spirit. Each pupil belongs to a House (Earth, Wind or Fire) and sporting and other events are held throughout the year to enable the girls to represent their House. Points are awarded to Houses and an overall House Cup awarded at the end of the school year.
Senior School and Sixth Form
In the Senior School and Sixth Form our pastoral system provides the supportive framework for the emotional and intellectual development experienced at this age. In addition to all the academic guidance and support given by every member of staff, each girl is in the care of a tutor who oversees her progress. Each tutor group falls within one of our four Halls (Hadspen, Longleat, Montacute and Stourhead). The Hall and tutor group system provides the opportunity for friendships across year groups, enhances the girls’ ability to relate to others and be a valued member of the school community. Allegiance to the Halls extends into the Sixth Form and a wide range of Inter-Hall activities including charity events, music, drama, sport and public speaking promotes a spirit of positive competition. Heads of Hall and the Head of Sixth Form oversee all tutor groups and monitor the progress of every girl.
The school also has its own Medical Centre which is staffed by two qualified nursing Sisters as well as a visiting Counsellor. The centre is also supported by the Bruton Surgery with its comprehensive medical care.
