Music
Bruton School for Girls has a very active music department with a wide range of opportunities for performance both choral and instrumental. The School has three strong choirs; Prep School, Junior and Senior Choirs, which between them involve over 100 girls. The choirs of the Senior School have recently performed in both Exeter and Wells Cathedrals, and on tour in Belgium and Holland.

Over 220 instrumental lessons take place each week, covering all orchetrsal instruments, plus Guitar, Piano, Drums and Singing, and delivered by a team of fourteen visiting teachers. Associated Board exams take place at the school every term. There are two orchestras, a wind band, numerous string and wind chamber groups, as well as pop/rock groups.

There is a major musical production every year, recent examples having been “Honk”, “Guys and Dolls”, “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Into the Woods” together with Prep School productions “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and “Old Time Musical ”. Each term there is a Concert, Prep School Concert and a Recital Evening, in addition to a regular programme of lunchtime performances and sung church services.

There is a purpose-built music school, with ten sound-proof practice rooms, two computer rooms (with Midi/Sibelius), and a large main Music Room, equipped with keyboards, classroom percussion and a range of ethnic instruments. Staff in the Music Department teach in both the Prep and Senior schools, thus ensuring good continuity of learning.

Drama
The Bruton School for Girls Drama Department excels in regularly showcasing the talents of our dramatic performers. Recent Senior School and Sixth Form productions have included “The Ghost Sonata”, “The Crucible” and “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg”. Sixth Form and Fifth Form drama students also have the opportunity to produce their own performances which have included “Death and the Maiden” and “Separation”.

In the Preparatory School, regular drama lessons build confidence and culminate in a musical performance involving all students from years 2 - 6. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Jack and the Beanstalk" have been recent productions.

But it is not just about performing. Drama students are taught about all aspects of technical theatre and operate all the productions that take place. Students also go on regular visits to see live theatre in Bristol, Bath, London and Salisbury.

Theatre Studies is also a popular extra-curricular activity, and the Hobhouse Drama Studio is a specialist facility for workshop productions and 'speech and drama' presentations, including the huge annual entry for LAMDA examinations.

Art
Bruton’s dynamic Art Department aims to encourage the best in creative skills for all girls, from Preparatory level through to Sixth Form.  Art is popular at GCSE and A level, with students consistently attaining outstanding examination results.  Indeed, in 2005 two Bruton Sixth Formers achieved national recognition, when they were placed within the top ten A level Fine Art students in the country.

Visitors cannot fail to notice the vibrant pieces of art on display throughout the school, produced to an extremely high standard by girls of all ages and abilities. Upper School students have the opportunity to showcase their talents at local exhibitions and festivals, to much public acclaim.

The Department is rooted in fine art, with opportunities to explore techniques in drawing and painting, textiles, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, as well as traditional dark-room and digital photography.

Art teaching at Bruton is not limited to those students choosing it as a core subject.  Extra-curricular projects and activities offer students the opportunity to develop skills, pursue hobbies or simply relax whilst learning something new.

We believe that experiencing Art at Bruton is motivating and inspiring for all pupils and are delighted to welcome visitors to see for the work themselves.
