Help Haiti Day

Pupils at Bruton School for Girls and Sunny Hill Preparatory School took part in a day of activities to raise funds for Haiti.

All year groups from the Nursery to the Upper Sixth took part in a ‘mufti day’ on Monday 1st February 2010, paying to be able to wear their own clothes to school instead of the uniform.  In the Preparatory School, children also covered a map of Haiti with silver coins to raise funds.

On the same day girls and staff members brought homemade cakes into school to sell at break time.  Even the school catering team got involved by offering a frugal lunch of bread and soup to raise awareness of the plight of people suffering after the earthquake in Haiti.

The day of activities, which involved the whole school community, raised £1,240.  The funds will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, an international housing charity, who have been working in Haiti for 26 years.  Pupils from Bruton School for Girls travelled to Tanzania and worked on the construction of homes for the charity in 2007.

Headmaster of Bruton School for Girls, Mr John Burrough, said “Central to the school’s aims is to raise awareness of the world and to show compassion and consideration for others, particularly those less fortunate or in difficulties.  Once again the girls have shown practical support and generosity in their response.”
