Sixth Formers Excel in UK Maths Challenge
Bruton School for Girls is celebrating the achievement of two of its sixth form mathematicians.
In the recent UK Senior Maths Challenge, taken by 100,000 students from all over the country, Kelin Chen and Harriet Sharp both gained Gold certificates, awarded to the top 6 per cent of entrants. Their results qualified them for entry to the British Mathematical Olympiad, an extremely challenging test. Even though only the best maths students in the country took it, many get very low marks because it is so difficult (many score less than 10% for example). Both girls tackled the three-and-a-half hour test with confidence and enthusiasm. Kelin’s score of fifty per cent is remarkable, and it places her 109th of the 1300 Olympiad entrants nationally.
Headmaster, John Burrough, said “At Bruton, we have become used to girls gaining high scores in national mathematical competitions. Nonetheless, to reach the British Mathematical Olympiad is a significant achievement on which I congratulate both girls. The icing on the cake for the school is Kelin’s wonderful accomplishment in being placed well within the top ten per cent of these already-elite students.”
