What are the advantages of an all-girls-education?
A Girls' School Association (GSA) report published in 2007 shows an all-girls-education has a lifelong impact. See here for further information. Is there a bus service for Day Students?
Yes. There are a number of bus services available for day students. Buses are run both by the school and local bus companies. Please visit the transport page on this website or download our Bus Timetable.

Can I board for just one night?
Yes, day students may request to board for a single night. Some girls do this on a regular basis, for example every Tuesday night, because of a commitment like an after-school drama rehearsal. For some students it is just a one-off request. We keep a number of beds in the boarding houses free for this purpose but space is limited and requests are treated on a first-come basis.

Can boarders go home at weekends?
Yes, boarders are able to return home at weekends or stay with friends providing permission has been granted by the Housemistress. Weekly boarders return home every weekend and usually depart school on a Friday night and return on Sunday night or Monday morning. Girls involved in school sporting fixtures on Saturdays are required to attend these. On a school fixed exeat weekend of which there are two per term, all boarders must either return home or to their guardians.

What activities are there for boarders at weekends?
The Deputy Head (Boarding and Welfare) and House Staff arrange a number of activities each weekend starting on Friday night. These include trips to the Cinema, Bath and Bristol, shopping, visits to local historical towns and sites, in-school workshops and swimming. See our Boarding pages to find out more.

If I board how will I be able to keep in touch with home?
You can communicate with home and friends via email, letter or telephone. Each boarding house has its own ICT room where you can use the computers to send and receive emails to your own school email account. Boarders may use the school’s post collection to include letters or parcels home and stamps are available to purchase from our stationery shop. In the junior boarding house there is a telephone for student use and in the senior boarding house each girl has a telephone in her room. The girls can set up a telephone account with the school to use these phones.

If I board how many people will I share a room with?
Preparatory School girls in our junior house, Old Vicarage, share with 2 – 3 others when first joining. The older girls then move to dorms which they will share but have their own partitioned area with bed, drawers and study desk. Senior 4 (Year 10) girls are in Cumberlege House where they share rooms of two. Each girl has a bed, study desk and storage.
In the Seniors’ house, Highcroft, all girls have their own room with bed, desk, drawers and basin.

Does the school provide bedding or should I bring my own?
The school can provide bedding however we find that most girls like to bring their own duvet, bed linen and pillow to help them personalise their room. The girls’ laundry is done for them and in the senior house, machines are available and the girls often opt to do their own washing.

Do you have events with other Schools?
Yes, our girls regularly attend social events both at Bruton and other schools. We also invite schools to attend activities such as Science Week, Arts Week and sporting tournaments.

How many students are there at Bruton?
Around 350 with approximately 80 of this number in the Preparatory School. We usually have about 100 boarders.

What is an average class size?
In the Senior School class sizes are around 18-20 with classes of 12-15 in the Prep School.

My daughter is interested in Art.  Can I view student artwork?
We have a very strong Art Department and student artwork is displayed prominently throughout the school as well as in the Art Department. If you visit us on an Open Day or other event you can't help but admire the girl's work.  We are pleased to have an online Art Gallery on our Girls Only pages showcasing some of our students' artwork.  View Art Gallery.

What is the food like?
The food is delicious! Our catering team works hard to provide a variety of foods and caters for vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements or allergies.  Boarders enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room as well as morning and afternoon snacks.  Day girls have lunch in the dining room as well as snacks.  Have a look at a typical menu to find out more.

The Parent Staff Association runs a Second Hand Uniform Shop. This is open 8.30 am – 11.00 am and 3.30 pm – 5.00 pm on Thursdays during term time. Alternative times are available by appointment. Messages can be passed to the Uniform Shop via Reception – Tel (01749) 814400.

Where do your students go after Bruton?
Bruton girls achieve tremendous results at A level and most of our students go on to higher education at the university or college of their choice. We have a number of Oxbridge entrants each year as well as many girls attending the other top UK Universities. The strength of our Art and Drama departments is reflected in the number of students studying at the country’s finest Art Schools and performing arts colleges. How do I apply for entry?

When should I register my Daughter?
We recommend you register your daughter for entry as soon as possible. We do accept registrations at any time throughout the year but earlier applications are given priority.

Do you have Open Days?
Yes, we have a number of Open Days throughout the year as well as other events specifically for particular areas of the school, for example the Sixth Form Information Evening. However, we welcome individual family visits at any time. Visit the Open Days page for dates and details.

Can my daughter apply for a Scholarship?
Scholarships are available to girls joining the Senior School (Senior Form 1 and Form 3) or Sixth Form. Scholarships are awarded for outstanding ability in sport, art, drama, music or academic subjects.  Visit the Scholarship page to find out more or contact the Director of Admissions.

My daughter will be travelling to Bruton from overseas. Will there be someone to meet her at the airport?
We have a coach service for students arriving from overseas which will collect girls from London Heathrow on the day before term starts. Your daughter will be met by one of our house staff along with other students arriving on that day. You will need to advise us of your daughter’s flight details. The Sunny Hill Old Girls Association (SHOGA) has over 600 members and is always happy to hear from past students looking to get in touch with old friends. Can my child be given prescribed medicines at school?
Please note that medicine which is prescribed to be taken three times a day can often be delivered effectively out of normal school hours.  If medicine needs to be taken during the school day, parents or guardians are requested to hand in the medication in the original container to the class teacher (for a Prep School pupil) or to the Medical Centre (Senior School), in either case together with a signed consent form.
