Entrance Assessments

All girls joining the Senior School are required to sit our entrance assessments primarily for diagnostic purposes. These are normally held in the January prior to September entry although, in special circumstances, we allow girls to sit the assessments mid-year, and there are separate assessments for international students. Your daughter must be registered with us in order to complete the entrance assessments.

Entry to the Senior and Sixth Form is dependent upon the following:

  • Reference from the Headmaster/Headmistress of current school
  • Current school reports
  • Interview with the Headmistress (this is done via Skype for International students)
  • Successful completion of the Entrance Assessments (11+, 12+ and 13+ applicants) or Common Entrance Exams (13+ applicants) or GCSEs (Sixth Form applicants)

The entrance assessment dates for September 2019 are as follows:

Monday 21st January 2019  Senior 1 (11+)
Friday 25th January 2019 Senior 2 (12+) Senior 3 (13+) and Senior 4 (14+)

The Entrance Assessment Days are structured to include lessons and activities, as well as the assessments, to allow the girls to get to know others who will be joining their year group. These activities are designed to be fun and for Senior 1 may include a Modern Languages game, a Science experiment and baking in our Home Technology classrooms. Girls entering Senior 2 & 3 will complete their assessments and spend the rest of their day attending lessons with our current students. They will be assigned a ‘buddy’ of their own age who will look after them for the day.

  • Assessments for entry to the Senior School in Senior 1 (11+) are computer-based, comprising of a Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning test. Those girls who are applying for Scholarships will also be asked to complete assessments in Maths and English.
  • Girls entering the school in Senior 2 (12+) Senior 3 (13+) and Senior 4 (14+) will be assessed in Maths and English and take the computer-based Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests.

Girls from schools where they are being prepared for the 13+ Common Entrance Examinations have the option not to attend the BSG entrance assessments (unless applying for a scholarship), in which case offers will be made based on interview performance and Common Entrance Examination results. However you may opt to sit the Bruton School for Girls entrance assessments in place of Common Entrance (even if you are not applying for a scholarship).

Sixth Form Entry

Girls applying for entry to the Sixth Form are usually required to have achieved five A*-C grades at GCSE including at least grade B in subjects to be studied at A level. However, where special circumstances apply, each application is assessed on its own merits.

Entry to Reception, Pre-Prep and Prep School is dependent upon the following where applicable:

  • Reference from the Headmaster/Headmistress of current school
  • Current school reports
  • Literacy and Numeracy testing assessed informally during the Taster Day
